Materials: Steel vs Aluminium
Chassis and body material affects a box trailer's weight, corrosion resistance, repairability and price more than almost any other single spec decision.
Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel
Steel dipped in molten zinc after fabrication, forming a corrosion-resistant coating bonded to the whole structure — including welds and internal surfaces a painted trailer can't protect. Full hot-dip galvanising is used by manufacturers across the market, Australian and imported alike, on trailers built for a long working life or coastal/harsh conditions: galvanising resists salt exposure and general weathering far better than painted mild steel, without the ongoing maintenance a painted chassis needs. Steel is also inherently stronger per unit of thickness than aluminium, which is why heavier-duty box trailers are almost always steel-built. The trade-off is tare weight — a galvanised steel trailer is heavier than an equivalent aluminium one, which eats into the tow vehicle's payload margin.

Painted (Non-Galvanised) Steel
Cheaper up front than galvanised, but the paint layer only protects the surface it's applied to — any chip, weld seam, or internal cavity is exposed to corrosion once the coating is compromised. Painted steel trailers typically need more active maintenance (touch-up painting, rust treatment) over their working life, particularly in coastal or wet climates.
Aluminium
Naturally corrosion-resistant (no galvanising needed) and significantly lighter than steel for the same structural size — the main appeal being more usable payload for a given tow vehicle capacity, and easier manual handling (lighter tailgates, lighter overall tow weight). Aluminium is softer than steel, though, and more prone to denting or fatigue cracking under repeated heavy or sharp-edged loads, and repairs generally require specialist aluminium welding rather than a standard steel repair shop.
Flooring: Checker Plate vs Timber
Checker plate steel or aluminium flooring is the common modern standard — durable, easy to hose out, and slip-resistant when wet. Timber flooring (usually treated pine or hardwood over a steel frame) is still seen on some trailers and offers a degree of cushioning for fragile loads and easier localised repair (replace a single board rather than patch metal), at the cost of periodic re-treatment and a shorter working life in wet conditions than metal.

Is galvanised steel better than aluminium for a box trailer?
For most general and heavy-duty use, yes — galvanised steel is stronger, more impact-resistant, and the galvanising protects welds and internal surfaces that a painted trailer can't. Aluminium's advantage is weight: a lighter trailer preserves more of the tow vehicle's payload capacity, which matters more for lighter tow vehicles or frequent heavy loads.
Do galvanised trailers ever rust?
Galvanising dramatically slows corrosion but isn't permanent — deep scratches, welds made after galvanising, or extreme coastal exposure over many years can eventually allow rust to start. It remains far more durable than painted steel under normal use.
Is galvanising an 'imported trailer' feature or an Australian one too?
Neither exclusively — full hot-dip galvanising, including internal chassis members and welds, is used by both imported manufacturers (Variant, Vlemmix and others) and Australian builders on trailers designed for a long service life or harsh conditions. It's a build-quality choice a manufacturer makes, not a feature tied to country of origin, so check the specific trailer's construction rather than assuming based on where it was built.
