Single Axle

One axle, two wheels. Lightest, simplest, cheapest to maintain (one set of bearings, one set of tyres), and the most manoeuvrable at low speed and when reversing. Best suited to lighter loads — typically domestic and light trade use where GTM stays well under 2,000kg. A single-axle trailer pivots more readily around its own axle line, which is an advantage when reversing into tight spots but can translate to more pitching movement over rough ground compared to a tandem.

Tandem Axle

Two axles close together, four wheels. Distributes load across twice the tyre contact area, giving higher capacity and noticeably more stability at highway speed — the trailer tracks straighter and is less prone to sway. Tandem setups also add a practical safety margin: if one tyre fails in transit, the trailer is still supported on the other three wheels rather than dropping onto the road. Trade-offs are added tare weight, more tyres and bearings to maintain, and a wider turning/scrub radius at low speed since both axles don't pivot independently.

Tri-Axle

Three axles, six wheels — uncommon on domestic box trailers and mostly seen on heavier commercial, machinery or specialist haulage trailers where GTM pushes toward or beyond the top of the light-trailer bracket. Maximises load distribution and stability but adds significant tare weight, cost, and rolling resistance. Rarely the right choice for a general-purpose box trailer; worth considering only when the load profile genuinely demands it.

Suspension Types

Independent suspension (each wheel moves separately) rides more smoothly over uneven ground and is fitted across a range of trailer brands, including some European-engineered ranges. Shared-beam or rocker-roller suspension (common on tandem setups) links both axles so load is shared evenly between them even over uneven ground, at some cost to independent wheel articulation. Neither is "better" universally — independent suspension favours ride comfort and tyre life on rough surfaces; shared-beam favours consistent load sharing under heavier, less speed-sensitive use.
