Coupling Types

Light trailers must use a coupling that can be engaged and disengaged without tools (a quick-release mechanism), sized to the trailer's ATM:

  • 50mm ball hitch — approved for trailers up to 3,500kg ATM
  • Pintle hook — approved for trailers up to 4,500kg ATM

Whatever the type, the coupling must be strong enough for the fully loaded trailer weight and fitted with a positive locking mechanism that can't disengage under normal towing loads or vibration.

Towball / Coupling Weight

Towball weight (also called tow bar download, TBD) is the portion of the loaded trailer's weight that presses down on the tow vehicle's hitch rather than sitting on the trailer's own wheels. General Australian industry guidance sits in an 8–12% of ATM range as the stable towing "sweet spot," with 15% treated as a practical upper limit — but the number that actually matters is whichever of your vehicle, tow bar, coupling or hitch has the lowest rating: that component sets the real ceiling regardless of what percentage the trailer itself was designed around.

Variant trailers are a notable exception to the general rule: their chassis geometry is engineered for a tow bar download of roughly 3% of GTM — substantially lower than the 10–15% typical of many Australian-built trailers of equivalent size. A lower TBD means less weight pressing down on the tow vehicle's rear axle and hitch, which is a real factor in tow vehicle stability, particularly for lighter SUVs and utes towing at or near their rated capacity.

Safety chains are a legally required backup to the coupling itself, not a redundant extra — they're what keeps the trailer attached to the tow vehicle if the primary coupling fails or disengages in transit.

Tow Bar Capacity

The tow bar's rated load capacity must be at least equal to the loaded mass of the trailer — not the trailer's unladen (tare) weight. Checking a tow bar's rating against a trailer's tare weight rather than its full ATM is one of the most common towing mistakes.
